Constable: The Making of a Master reveals some of the hidden stories behind John Constable's better-known paintings. The exhibition, at the V&A, presents Constable's work alongside old masters of classical landscape for the first time. Placing Constable's paintings next to work by the likes of Ruisdael and Claude demonstrates how he was influenced by their compositional ideas and formal values. Some of his best-known and most-loved works are part of the exhibition, including The Haywain and oil sketches painted outdoors. Other highlights include the thousands of etchings he collected, said to be a vital resource for his own image making, and the mezzotints of his paintings created towards the end of his life that helped to secure his lasting legacy as one of the greats.
